You have to read this!
This is going to be a short but important post with a cool idea, keep reading.
Do you remember the Japaneses concept of Ikigai introduced in the post about finding YOUR UNIQUE THING?
Just a little recap in case you missed it:
Ikigai in short:
The term can be translated roughly “the reason to live” the thing that drives you to wake up every day.
It is the thing that
You love AND
You are good at AND
The World needs AND
You can be paid for it.
Right in the middle of the crossing of those 4 things, sits your ikigai.
Today on my walk after lunch I was thinking about this and somehow came up with an interesting, and really important idea.
It is fantastic if you are lucky to find your ikigai and be able to spend most of your time in your ikigai, living your ikigai.
But let’s be honest, this might not be so easy at all (again, check the post series regarding FINDING YOUR UNIQUE THING).
There might not even be an intersection of thing you love, the thing you are good at, the thing you do to help the World be a better place, and what you are paid for, because they are so much apart.
Or maybe there is something in the intersection of them but it just makes no sense…
What do you do in such case?
Immediately get stressed out when you realize you do not have an ikigai?
Don’t do that, just relax, you are all good!
Here comes the idea, here comes how to hack ikigai:
Do not worry if you can not come up with a single thing that ticks all 4 boxes.
You can still live a purpose driven, fulfilled life…
…as long as you have all 4 things present in your life.
BUT they do not need to be related or have something in their intersection at all.
Why just have 1 reason to get out of bed each day – why not have 4 or even more if you prefer? (Actually for me it is 5 things, combined in uinque concept – more on that later)
As long as you have something that you love,
you know there is something you know you are good at,
there is something you do to help others, you contribute somehow,
and you get paid for something that you do and are at least OK with to pay the bills,
you are all good, right?
Actually you might even end up living a more colorful life this way as you can enjoy 4 maybe completely different things in your life that provide your fulfillment instead of just one that covers all.
This is a good example of the Bruce Lee principle (see more in PRINCIPLES).
Take a concept – understand it – and bend it, customize it so that it still works but fits and serves you the best.
Do you want to know about my 5 things?
Maybe I will share it here one day.
Maybe only with my friends on my mailing list…:)
