We are going to apply Mr Han’s wisdom straight from The Karate Kid (yes, the remake):
“Everything is kung fu.”
Everything is exercise, you just have to be conscious about it and use the opportunities to train life gives you.
Do you find it hard to find an hour during the day when you can hit the gym, yoga studio or go jogging?
Do you find it even hard to find 15 minutes to get dressed and do some exercise at home?
While I think everyone who is serious about their health should find 20 minutes a day to move their body, I completely get that this is not always possible.
Now (in January 2020) that we have newborn twins in the house in addition to our (now) big son, a job where I need to perform, side gigs, stuff to do around the house, a family to take care of etc. I sometimes find it even hard to find the time to take a shower or have a coffee…
The next couple of months are going to be like this and I have no problem with it.
This is just how having babies works, the priorities are different for some time I have to skip my morning sessions outside with my jumping rope…
But I can’t end up doing no exercise otherwise I feel really like crap and I am just not able to perform, to be present etc.
So I needed to hack exercising, I needed to hack how and what I think about exercising.
You can and should do it too, here is how:
Examples follow to give you some ideas:
And the list goes on, I will update it occasionally.
Here is my secret tip for the end:
Just be conscious about your movement and breathing.
Whatever you do (think of really everyday tasks like opening a door, or picking up something from the ground when you drop it)
be aware of your movement and breathing and execute with elegance, with power, with flexibility, with beauty, with flow, with rhythm. Keep your spine straight, your knees flexible, your breathing calm…
Doing so feels good, looks good, does good for you, you will see.
Did you know that in the blue zones where people live the longest and in good health the concept of exercising is literally unknown. They don’t exercise but they are active the whole day, and this adds unquestionably to their lives in longevity and in quality too.
The takeaway is, if you don’t have the time to go to the gym regularly – but even if you do – aim to be active, look for the possibilities and make everything you do exercise, move consciously with beauty and power, make everything kung fu.
