Ideas on how to get conscious about and aligned with your body. But what does this even mean? Keep on reading…
So the body is where it all starts.
…at least for me.
I will explain in a minute why it is like that but first let me emphasise again.
The connection between your mind and body is incredible, you can not separate them, you can influence and change your body purely with the power of your mind, and change your menthal, psychological etc. state, your state of mind thru your body. One is not more or less important than the other.
Why I put body first:
My father was a semi professional athlete, a boxer, this is still a strong part of his identity decades after retiring from the sports officially.
Maybe as a result of his example I grew up in sports: I have a strong base in judo, some thai boxing, indoor climbing, kettlebell, windsurfing, wakeboarding and all the other stuff that comes with those, like running, biking, swimming millions of hours in the gym…
From an early age I have a strong relation to my body, I exactly know what I am capable of, where my limits are and how I can go beyond my limits (more on that later).
I am very much aware of my body and the signals coming from it, I learned how to read them and how to respond to reach a certain outcome.
This means things like:
If I am in any kind of pain I know almost exactly where it comes from, where it goes, how long it takes to go away, and what I need to do to get over it as quickly as possible. Because of this being sick is not an issue for me, if I rarely catch something I am over it in 2 days.
Because I am so aware of my body, I am also well aware of it’s effect on my state of mind.
I very consciously pay attention to it, I try to recognize the patterns, “what happens if I do/eat/drink this or that”, and later use the discovered patterns to rapidly get into a state or get out if it in case it is a bad one.
For me maybe mostly because of my background in sports , getting to know my body, pushing myself, consciously “manipulating” my physical or mental states thru my body came first, so it is easier for me to relate to this, the mind side came only later when I was beginning to dive deeper into self development.
I believe it is easier for you too to relate to the body side if you are just starting out.
Just change this one thing if you want to make a change:
Preferably every day.
And you will have a different life.
You will not only look and feel differently, but you will be amazed on the effects it has on your ability to focus, your mood, your sleep etc. in general, your mental state.
And all this because you did just one simple thing: move a bit.
There is a huge science background behind it that explains why and how this exactly works on the level on neurochemistry, hormones etc.
We will dive into this later.
OK Bo you told me that you are a sports guy and sports is good for me to, but what is your point?
Take this one idea away from this post:
Get aware of your body, be conscious about it, try to listen to the signals it sends.
Learn to read them and you will have much greater influence on your mood, state, overall quality of life.
In the beginning you can start by taking notes like e.g. you can record what kind of exercise or activity you did, and what effect it had on you.
Every circumstance matters like eg.
When did you do it, what did you do before and after it, what and when did you eat and drink, what clothes did you have on, note anything and everything that could possibly contribute to your experience.
The more details you have, the more data you will have to analyze to understand causes and effects.
Later as you gather lots of experience and pay attention to it consciously, this gets very intuitive, you won’t need your notes anymore.
You just need to listen, decode, adjust, improve.
How conscious are you about your body?
Can you sense and decode the signals it sends?
